DON'T MISS THIS ONCE-IN-YOUR-LIFETIME EVENT!
Some of you (e.g., Chris Rapier) were there when Savage Republic played
on the Cut at Carnegie Mellon University in 1987, dancing to the tribal
rhythms while they stoked the fires and pounded on the oil drums. Many
more of you weren't even born when Savage Republic began 'smashing the
state' back in 1981 Los Angeles, a time period also marked by the rise
of deathrockers such as 45 Grave and Christian Death. Savage Republic
combined dark postpunk with furious industrial/tribal percussion and
Middle-Eastern/Arabic-influenced modal melodies played on reverbed
guitars on their albums "Tragic Figures", "Ceremonial", "Jamahiriya"
and "Customs", and appeared on important mid-80s compilations such as
Sub Pop 100 and the Viva Los Angeles album (which also featured
Psi-Com, the band that later became Jane's Addiction). The band was
staunchly independent - printing their own 'republic' stamps, posters
and record covers using the hand-operated letterpress that became their
trademark artistic statement. Their own label, in fact, was called
Independent Project Records.
Now you've got a second chance to see the band that Godspeed You Black
Emperor essentially imitated :)
Savage Republic have reunited with six original members for a reunion
tour that will only hit three cities east of the Mississippi: Chicago,
New York, and - you guessed it! - Pittsburgh.
