Hey goth kids:
D.C. instrumental-rockers TONE have been on labels owned by Neurosis,
Fugazi and Savage Republic. Tone's founding guitarist Norm Veenstra used
to live in Pittsburgh. He and I co-promoted the first-ever show in
Pittsburgh billed as "an evening of dark gothic rock" (Of A Mesh = Slave
Cave + The Garden in Jan 1988 at CMU). He had a show for several years on
WRCT which I think was initially called "Storm Front" but later on was
called "Dark Rock" or something similar.
He founded a promotion company called Stormfront Productions which from
1988-91 brought dozens of great shows to Pittsburgh, some in collaboration
with myself, including
Wolfgang Press, Young Gods, Savage Republic, Government Issue, and Crime &
the City Solution. With the help of CMU AB, he presented "Winterblast", a
1989 concert at CMU which featured Naked Raygun, Live Skull, and Bitch
Magnet, which drew 500 people. After Norm left Pittsburgh in 1991, he
passed on his productions to Greg Panchisin (it became MB Productions,
which brought such acts to the Upstage as Helmet & KMFDM) which lasted
another couple years. Meanwhile, Norm became the night manager of the 9:30
Club in D.C., a position he held for well over a decade, until recently
leaving the venue to work in real estate. Over that time, he formed the
guitar army Tone and released five albums, including the newest one
"Solidarity" on Neurot. The band is heavily influenced by his love for the
music of Savage Republic, Glenn Branca, and Sonic Youth among many others.
So, if you're interested in meeting the guy who co-founded and nurtured
the Pittsburgh goth scene for years before you were around, come to this
venue at this time and date. Hope to see you there!

There has been music from Tone over the past few years - it's true. But
it's clear to anyone who follows this Washington D.C. group and will be
obvious to all that are introduced to Tone through Solidarity that this is
the work that matters. You need not trace this all-instrumental band back
through time to its source in order to know Tone. Jump into the sound the
band is creating now, at this artistic moment, and revel in it. Then
imagine each track played with masterful control and touch, amplified and
impressively recorded by the mighty J. Robbins (Against Me!, Clutch,
Murder By Death).
Tone now find their recordings subject to an unexpected axiom - the law of
entropy. The band is moving from a more ordered to a less ordered state
with every record. This is not to suggest the band has lost skill or
focus, but rather that they use their knack for cacophony to cover a
greater breadth, expanding the current roster to include five guitars, one
bass, and two drummers.
Tone's ever widening orbit around the riff has allowed the songs on
Solidarity to carry even more emotional weight than 2003's Ambient Metals
(Dischord), which staked a claim to sonic territory along side those with
whom Tone so often share a stage: Mono, Explosions In The Sky, Tulsa
Drone, Do Make Say Think, Maserati, and godspeedyou!blackemperor.

BEWARE OF SAFETY
http://www.myspace.com/bewareofsafety
Beware of Safety is an LA-based ambient/psychedelic band on The Mylene
Sheath label. Their instrumental album Dogs is a trance meditation that
blends wondrous resonant influences -- a pinch of prime Pink Floyd, a dose
of Doors, the blooming dignity and bursting explosions of Sigur Ros. The
result is a swelling sonic landscape both sweeping and dramatic. Swirling
guitars, light and shade, whispers to screams, murder in the
cathedral...it's all in the mystery code.
