 Ah, but my comfort and that person's comfort aren't truly commensurate: my comfort doesn't impose something on them, while their comfort-- which is avoidable with a quick trip for them outside-- imposes carcinogens on me.

Well, its noth. I personally think it would be much better to effect a
smoking 'ban' by making it socially unacceptable rather that imposing
it by legislative fiat. I was trying to get that across initially.

Well, thats the crux of the issue. The person who paid just as much as
you feels that they should have the ability to enjoy themselves.
Politeness argues that in these sort of cases people try to make
reasonable accomodations for the other person. However, it also
demands that each group endure some level of discomfort. The question
is, and always has been, what degree of comfort is tolerable?
