Arvin (DJ Circuitry) of The Night Shift is one of many DJs who are
using a laptop as their primary source. There are also systems
designed for plugging in one or two iPods, or external hard drives, to
a self-contained control unit and mixing console.
192 bit MP3s or AACs are probably more than suitable for DJing,
especially when you're on a non-audiophile sound system.
I haven't personally gone that route for a number of reasons I won't
bore you all with.
