I think gothic subculture often mirrors larger culture in some way.
Goth was full of self-mocking, self-referential humor in the
mid-90's... not unlike the pop culture obsession among Gen X'ers as a
whole.  It seems a little alien now since goth is pretty fringe again
(at best, splintered) in most places.
