>What about stuff at the DNA Lounge?
It depends, Jamie has to pay the bills first and satisfy his tastes second. He's not as much a fan of the bleepy bloopy as I am, but I like a lot of the other acts and clubs he hosts. (They keep track of how many times people vomit on different nights, apparently the asian rave nights are the worse). I really like the DNA and how Jamie's been able to make such an improvement in the club scene by not being purely profit driven. It seems to me (as a newbie to Pittsburgh) that Mr. Smalls is the same sort of venue.
It's really hard to figure out the SF scene. Art of Noise didn't even sell out Slim's (~200 capacity) while Kraftwerk sold out the Warfield (~2500 capacity I'm guessing). Sisters or Nick Cave can play two nights in a row, and every ska band in the world seems to stop in the bay area but I couldn't find anyone willing to take a chance with a KOMPRESSOR show. MC Chris played the Elbo Room (basically the size of the bar area at Mr. Smalls) when he was in SF, so maybe it's a matter of the size of the act and getting enough promotion. I couldn't even give away my extra tickets for the last Crystal Method show at the Warfield so maybe that's not it.
One thing I do miss about the SF bay area that I'm hoping to find here are places that let DJs come in and spin music. Even a crappy little bar in SF might have a decent PA and amps that you can plug into, the better bars and record stores will have a turntable or two and a couple of CD players. Am I just not going to the right bars or record stores to see fliers for these sort of local shows?

I'm going to try and make the show if I can get away from work long enough. What are shows like over at CMU? Is there a bar? Is it byob?
