Pittsburgh tip: you can't hail cabs in this city. Calling Yellow Cab
is your only option, and the service you get is in line with their
monopoly on urban taxis. That is, it sucks.
Port Authority is a pretty good option. Their website
(http://www.portauthority.org/) is a little unintuitive but it says
they'll operate "extra" service for "First Night." I've gotten very
helpful people when I called them. I highly recommend ringing them
up, telling them where you live, and asking what you can do. They'll
be able to tell you what routes you can take, and probably mail you
bus schedules applicable to your new digs, to boot.
Parking in Oakland at night isn't too bad. Officers don't really
ticket so you can get away with "no parking" zones where you see other
cars-- don't do anything egregious like park in front of a hydrant and
you'll be fine. I've never gotten a ticket at night and never had my
(admittedly crappy) car broken into. If you're paranoid, many people
use a very nearby lot
(http://www.city.pittsburgh.pa.us/pghparkingauthority/html/forbes_semple.html).
Welcome to Pittsburgh.
