EDM = Electronic Dance Music, which is basically an elitist's 
umbrella phrase because "techno" is a terribly passe word and the 
rave scene has been dead for anywhere between three and twelve years, 
depending on who you ask.  Artists who call themselves EDM tend to be 
interested in a shiny snazzy sound that is less monotonous than 
trance, less hiphoppy than house, and not based on sampled loops like 
some jungle tends to be.

Wil's synopsis of synthpop/futurepop was dead on.  I'd also just add 
that some semi-indie-electroclash-dancepunk bands are also calling 
themselves synthpop these days, so the ironikids have their own 
corner of the genre.
